about

Hail U is a dedication to Christobel’s maternal lineage. The name itself comes from her Great Grandmother, Tiblez Hailu, a Tigrinyan women from Asmara, Eritrea. In Amharic, Hailu means 'My Power'.

Christobel’s evocative vocals float through tunnels of nostalgia and fuzzy visions of her ancestors wisdom. The EP explores themes of empowerment, gratitude and self-identification, opening a portal of connection to her maternal ancestors to discover a powerful space of deep, collective, cultural healing and connectedness. Hail U is a labour of love celebrating the strength, sacrifice, and eternal power of our mothers.

These tracks were extracted from a larger body of work originally produced for and performed at FCAC's Emerging Cultural Leaders showcase in 2018, and reworked into a four track EP. The work features samples from Christobel’s Mother and Aunty, chants from the coptic church in which she was baptised, ululations, and elements inspired by Tarab.

The embroidery itself incorporates different elements and symbolism from the blood and culture of my maternal lineage. My hope is that this project as a whole resonates with those with relationships to these different cultures, and whose identities have been fractured by the ongoing affects of colonisation and the arbitrary binaries of borders and nationalities.

This is for my mother, and her mother, and her mother too

Special thanks to my mum Nagwa, my Auntie Rita for allowing me to sample their voices. Thank you to my mum for teaching me what you know of our maternal lineage, and for translating the lyrics for the embroidery piece pictured.

Thanks to my sisters Dom and Rebecca for your inspiration and enthusiasm on this project. Thanks also to Dan for your support from the very beginning and your belief in me, your encouragement especially in the final stages carried me over! Finally, thank you to my Teta for showing me the warmest love and my maternal ancestors for the sacrifices you made and the lives that you gave. I’m so grateful to you, and without you, this work would obviously not exist. This is yours.

All tracks imagined, written, recorded, produced, mixed and mastered by Christobel Elliott on the stolen lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. I pay my respects to elders past, present and emerging, and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded.

As a settler on unceded land, I recognise Indigenous peoples ongoing connection to the waters, land and culture and the impact of colonisation on their way of life, wellbeing, language and culture.
